Guest Post: My Life Is About To Change

Hi! My name is Lyla, and you can find me and my ramblings over at My Life As Lyla. Why am I “guest posting” on my Mom’s blog during Mom Week when I’m clearly not a mom? The answer is in parts. I got my cast off after six long weeks. What better place to showcase this other than a style blog? I can finally wear all of my normal clothes without worrying about stretching things out to make it over my cast. Plus it’s too nice out to have to wear a cast.

The second part is I wanted to be the one to share the good news! I’m going to be a big sister!!!

Guest Post: Britney’s Dress Smart Mom Tips

Hey guys. I’m happy to be guest posting today! I’m Brittney from A Day in the Life Too…, and I’m a mom of three young kids (ages 2, 4, & 6) AND a style blogger… and, yes, in case you’re wondering, peanut-butter-shoulder IS the new black. Or should be.

I don’t claim to be the world’s best dresser OR mother, but I have a few tips and tricks that help me be about mediocre on both counts. And I don’t know about all of you, but if I can shoot for “average,” then I figure I’m doing all right! (My husband’s favorite mantra in college was: “D’s get degrees!” Heh. He’s an engineer, and his classes were way harder than mine…) (But, no, he didn’t graduate with Ds. He’s a smarty-pants.)

Now that we’ve established I’m no overachiever but, darn it all, I’m honest, let’s begin.

Tip 1: Embrace the beachy-wave-au-natural hair love of today. Most days, I get out of the shower, put some curl and anti-frizz product in my hair, and then do whatever else I need to for the next half hour. Then, and only then, do I blow dry the rest of my hair and, as needed/time permits, I may touch up about 3-4 strands with a curling iron. Viola. Hair. Done in under 5 minutes of effort.

Tip 2: Don’t be afraid of bare legs. Unless you haven’t had time to shave (*cough* me, most days), then just throw on a pair of colored tights. Not only are they a hot item, but they’re perfect for winter/spring weather AND add a perfect pop of color in about 2 seconds. They don’t have to “match,” in fact, I think it’s better when they don’t. Just make sure they “go.” (Note: I actually did shave, so I went bare-legged…I have a pair of red tights that I purposefully excluded from this ensemble because of their matchiness. Maybe you disagree, which is the beautiful thing about personal style!)

Tip 3: Have a piece of versatile jewelry that you can throw on without thinking about it. For me, it’s my large golden boyfriend watch. If you check my blog, you’ll see I wear it at least 4-5 times a week. Because it’s easy and brainless (and the brain cells left over in my head are clinging on for dear life, so I don’t like to stress them out too much), but it’s still chunky enough to make a statement.

Tip 4: Belt it up, buttercup! Even when you don’t think you need it, a belt is almost always useful for an overall ensemble. It adds structure, definition, and visual interest.

Tip 5: Even if you’re a neutral kinda gal, adding just one pop of color goes a long way to making you look polished and fun. And, by jove, who doesn’t want to be the “fun” mom on the block? Or, at least, fool everyone into thinking you’re fun even when you’re sleep-deprived and ornery because, look, she’s got on a yellow plaid scarf or a red striped shirt.

So, they’re not rocket science, but these are a few of my tips. And now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to dine on mac & cheese. Like I said: shootin’ for average. J (For more style ideas and/or mildly humorous chat, come on by my daily outfit blog:

Guest Post: Style Do’s and Don’ts for Busy Moms

Style Dos and Don’ts for the Busy Mom


Hi everyone! My name is Melissa and I blog over at A Working Mom’s Closet. While Danielle is away from No Guilt Fashion, she asked if I would pop my little head over here to keep all of her friends (that’s YOU!) entertained for a day.


I know that most of you are moms of some sort, either SAHMs, WAHMs or moms who work outside of your home (is there an acronym for that one?). As mothers, sometimes we get into the rut of dressing for practicality purposes only, choosing to pour all of our time, energy and effort into our family while  and leaving ourselves in the dust. We need to stop doing that to ourselves. How are we going to teach our children to be good to themselves while balancing the pressures of family and life if we don’t model it for them when we have the chance?


I’m sure many of you have seen the show What Not to Wear on TLC. Sometimes the women that are featured fight them tooth and nail in the beginning but by the end, they realize that by allowing yourself to care enough to look your very best and dress the way that makes you feel GREAT about who and what you are, it snowballs into making you a happier, stronger and more relaxed person all around. That can only mean good things for you and for your family!


Here are some of my tricks, tips and hints to make taking care of your style as easy as possible. I realize some of these might push you out of your comfort zone a little, but how can we expect to grow and improve if we don’t try new things?


DO: Try it on. Always. Even if you think it will fit you like a tent, or if it looks too small, or if you think it’ll make your butt look huge, try it on. You might be surprised!


DO: Ignore the size on the tag. IGNORE IT I SAID. The sizing of women’s clothing has to be one of the most ridiculous things in the world. Some of my skirts are a size 4 but then I have one that’s an 11…and they all fit. Tag size is not the final verdict. If you normally wear a medium and it doesn’t fit you well, don’t automatically assume that the shirt won’t work for you. Try a large (or small)! No one is going to see what that tag says, all they will see is how great the item looks on you and how big a smile your smile is because you feel awesome.


DON’T: Assume a trend won’t work on you. Find a way to MAKE it work, if you really like it. “They” say that horizontal stripes shouldn’t be worn if you’re trying to look thinner but they’re so trendy right now. Wear them anyway! Think a belt would look ridiculous? Don’t assume! Try TONS of them on! Try wide ones, skinny ones, stretchy ones, rope ones, ribbons, sashes…try them all. Find the one that makes you feel good, decide WHY it makes you feel good (because it’s stretchy, because it’s skinny, etc.) and then go find more like it.

DON’T: Be afraid to combine colors. Look at nature and designs everywhere. Notice how pinks and purples look so beautiful when flowers are arranged together in a vase, or how green and blue look so pretty next to each other in pictures of the beach, ocean and sky. They work in those cases, so don’t think they won’t work in your outfits! Try them and if YOU like how they look, wear them!

DO: Wear black and white with a pop of color, or all black with a pop of color, or black and gray with a pop of color. They are classic, chic, and universally flattering.


DON’T: Be afraid of dresses at the playground. If you think they might blow up in the wind, wear some boyshorts underneath them. Dresses are some of THE MOST comfortable and flattering pieces a mom can wear. They’re so incredibly quick and easy to put on, and they can go from a playdate to lunch in a heartbeat. And then out to dinner with a quick change of shoes and jewelry!

DO: Wear something other than flip flops. Kitten heels and flats can be just as comfortable but make you feel much more put together. Flip flops have their place in the world (at the beach, at a theme park, taking out the trash) but you’ll feel much more complete (and therefore confident and sexy!) in a different shoe that’s just as comfortable.


DO: Invest in cardigans and blazers. They can tone any outfit down and make virtually anything work appropriate. I’m not kidding.


DON’T: Be afraid to try combinations you never would have thought of before. Layer a blouse under dress. Layer a sweater over a dress. Layer a tank over a blouse. TRY THINGS ON before deciding it doesn’t work.


DO: Wear jewelry! Maybe it’s just me and I got lucky with my daughter, but I wore necklaces and earrings all throughout her grabby infant phase and never had a problem. I may have had one or two necklaces break, but that’s why I wore the inexpensive and super fun jewelry around her. The expensive stuff is saved for nights out!  Truly, a statement necklace in bright colors can take a plain outfit to incredible in such one simple step and make you feel like a new person.


And last but not least, DO: Follow No Guilt Fashion! Danie has fabulous style and is an inspiration to moms everywhere!

Guest Post: Mom Myths vs Facts

This week I’m hosting a few guest bloggers this week that are going to offer up some great advice for fashionable moms.
Hello everyone!!  It’s Natasha from over at Required2BeInspired, and I’m absolutely thrilled to be guest posting here for Mom Week!!
When Danie asked that I write something relating to motherhood and fashion I instantly thought back to when I was first pregnant with my daughter and how I kept thinking that there were so many things in my closet I would no longer be able to wear after she was born.  I remember telling my best friend shortly after my daughter was born that I needed to buy more “practical” clothing pieces and shoes.  I knew one thing for sure though, I wasn’t ever going to become a “frumpy” mommy, but I still thought that I needed a lot of flat shoes, longer hemlines and “easy to wear” clothes.
Today I am going to tackle 3 common Myths relating to Mothers and Fashion.
Myth #1
It is best for moms to avoid wearing chunky jewelry:
Fiction!!  I have heard of a few mothers who believe that wearing chunky jewelry around young children is hazardous.  I suppose this could be true if that jewelry includes spikes, but I’m pretty sure that is not the case for most women.  I personally have found that chunky jewelry is a mothers best friend!!  When my daughter was teething she enjoyed gnawing on my baubles and when we were out and about and she was having a hard time staying still I would take off a piece of jewelry and let her play with it.  I realize that some jewelry could be a hazard, which is why it is important to make sure that nothing is loose, all chains are heavy and secure, and most importantly make sure the piece is not small enough to swallow!
Myth #2
It’s easier for moms to wear flats:
Fact.  Of course it’s easier…I’m pretty sure it’s easier for all humans to wear flats as opposed to heels, unless you are Victoria Beckham.  The real question is how much harder would it be to wear heels as opposed to flats?  Not a whole lot!  And since when is it mandatory that mothers take the easy way out?!?  I personally find flats to be a bit boring…I’ll wear them every now and then, but my outfit is instantly more fabulous if I’m wearing a great pair of heels.  I realize that it can be difficult to chase a child around while wearing a fabulous pair of stilettos, so why not try a great pair of wedges or platforms instead?  Many shoe designers have also introduced the “new” low heel, which is making it a lot easier for busy moms to stay stylish while keeping up with the kids!
Myth #3
No white clothes, EVER!!:
Fiction.  This is definitely fiction due to a handy little miracle worker called Tide To-Go.  I always have a tube of it in my purse, and that stuff really is like magic!  I also don’t see why any mother should have to deprive herself of wearing white for fear of stains when you can safely use bleach on white fabric!\
The real lesson here is that it really isn’t all the hard to create outfits that balance fashion and function!
